Let us understand stress, especially stress that is chronic and is not relieved by simple daily rest, it is essential to dig deeper. The underlying reason is the inability of the body and mind to bounce back. The elasticity of the body has been impaired. In other words, the capacity for resilience is weakened. Everybody has the capacity for resilience, as long as the stress triggers do not outstrip its capacity. Stress is a reaction to inner or outside events and can be expressed in varying  ways – anger, anxiety, depression, ruminating, withdrawal, procrastination, attention deficit, workaholism, burnout. However normal stress reactions emerge and then settle back. That means it has the ability to go away, when not required. Chronic stress does not have an easy pathway to settle back. 

This incredible understanding from Ayurveda and yoga, is to build the body ground up, and not top down. Unsupported talk-therapy cannot repair and rejuvenate the physical body by itself. A healthy lifestyle is essential. When the container, the body, is strong, then the mind can flourish. The two critical pillars are – digestion, the ability of the body to receive wholesome nourishment, and sleep, the ability of the mind to deeply rest and rejuvenate. That is the why stress disorders affect both:

●Digestion – irregular appetite, bloating, ulcers, emotional eating, constipation, diarrhoea, GI tract issues

In Ayurveda there are some world renowned medhya herbs, medhya means mind, so these herbs help to soften, soothe and repair the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The nervous system can be compared to electrical wiring, that needs a plastic encasing to keep it safe and functioning safely – without fizzling out, and wearing out. That is how medhya herbs work – it supports by encasing the human electrical wiring system which is the nervous system. The nervous system connects each cell, body part to the brain. So stress shows up not only in the mind and emotions, but also in every affected body part. 

Ashwagandha

Ashwa’ means horse, ‘gandha’ is smell, it symbolizes the vigour of a horse. And indeed it is a popular herb for all kinds of debility, weakness, safe even for pregnant women. It has regenerative effect, is anti-aging, sattivc and very nurturing. It is calming and promotes deep, dreamless sleep. For anxiety and body fatigue, it a greatly supportive herb. 5gms in warm water or milk, with some sweetener, twice a day is very relaxing. To be avoided only if in need of deep detoxification or high ama. As ashwagandha is a builder, not a reducer. 

Brahmi

Is a tonic for pitta disorders, as it supports the adrenal glands. Calms the anxious vata, or depressive kapha. Brahmi, also known as Gotu Kola, improves creative intelligence, imagination, learning, concentration and memory. Brahmi improves the functioning of the central nervous system and complements modern treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and paralysis. Safe for long-term use. Relieves mental stress, negative emotion and depression. It supports all constitutions. Brahmi hair oil is cooling, reducing stress headaches and reduces hair problems- falling, greying and itchy scalp.

Licorice

Is a very moisturizing herb, that soothes and calms the nervous system. It can repair mucous even while gently detoxifying, and is great to counter hot, dry and toxic buildup. Only to be avoided if there is oedema or water retention, as it may be a case of high kapha. But for the frizzled nervous system, worn out by anxiety, anger, stress, depression or burnout, it is calming and nurturing. It builds up immunity and strength. Licorice regenerates the cerebrospinal fluid, contentment and harmony, as the cerebral fluids is where the sense of fulfillment is contained.
